Fifth Grade Teacher Alexa Guynes Joins TN's Milken Educators

GERMANTOWN, TN — "Education has always been my passion," said Alexa Guynes, fifth grade teacher at Dogwood Elementary, who was named Tennessee's 2022 Milken Educator Award recipient on November 17. The first recipient in Germantown Municipal School District, Alexa also received an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize she can use however she chooses. Brooke Amos, assistant commissioner of human capital for the Tennessee Department of Education, joined us for Alexa's big surprise.

Alexa told the assembly that she knew she wanted to be a teacher as far back as kindergarten and remembers every teacher she's ever had. "I never wavered on what I wanted to do because I saw the impact that some of my teachers made on me," she said. "I wanted to be that person for my students."
