Michiel Ford (KS ’01) passed away on September 18, 2023, at the age of 69. At the time of his Milken Award, Michiel was a science and astronomy teacher inspiring students and colleagues at Holton High School to reach for the stars. He and his students constructed the state's first robotic observatory, allowing students to conduct astronomy research using CCD imaging technology and a robotic telescope. In addition to receiving the Milken Award in 2001, he received a Toyota Tapestry grant, a Christa McAuliffe grant, a U.S. Department of Education grant, and Topeka Capital Journal Distinguished Kansan in Education (2001).
