Koki Tamashiro (HI '92) passed away, surrounded by family, on June 16, 2024. He was 91 years old. At the time of his Award, he was a math teacher in the Maui School District where he established competitive events and activities in mathematics such as an abacus competition and the Maui Math League. Also a computer resource teacher, Koki introduced computer education to the curriculum of the Maui School District and taught in-service workshops to teachers and college-bound students. Before retiring, Koki was a state distance learning teacher for the state of Hawaii, and through an “800” number at his home, students could call anytime to discuss math questions. The enthusiastic response to his program led other Hawaiian districts to initiate similar programs. Koki enjoyed teaching soroban and calculus and also served in the U.S. Army.

Koki is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and survived by his two daughters, Audrey and Wendy, and three brothers.
