Koki Tamashiro is a state distance learning teacher for the state of Hawaii. Mr. Tamashiro teaches mathematics through television to the islands of Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii, bringing educational opportunities to large numbers of students, children and adults. Through an "800" number at his home, students can call Mr. Tamashiro anytime and discuss one-on-one any math questions they may have. The enthusiastic response to his program has led other Hawaiian districts to initiate similar programs. Previously, as a math resource teacher for Maui, Mr. Tamashiro established competitive events and activities in mathematics such as an abacus competition and the Maui Math League. As a computer resource teacher Mr. Tamashiro introduced computer education to the curriculum of the Maui School District and taught in-service workshops to teachers and college-bound students.
