Ryan James Wins VA Milken Award

 

 

The surprise guest: Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation, who tells the students that their education will determine their success. "The education you receive will empower you to get a good job that is challenging and well-paying," he says. And while teachers have the most important job in the country—preparing young people for bright, successful futures—they are too seldom recognized for their work.

Three decades ago Milken created the Milken Educator Awards, an initiative that recognizes and rewards outstanding educators around the U.S. every year. And this year, he says, one of the country's top educators is right here at Brown. Who is it? Milken explains that he is looking for a teacher "who is a powerful mentor to others, and importantly, is invested in this community."
