Wayne Tanaka (NV '89) passed away on May 15, 2024, at the age of 75. At the time of his Milken Award, Wayne was principal of Del Robison Junior High School in the Clark County School District. An influential community leader and educator, Wayne developed a resident artist program, fostered community connections and established the Lions Club Self-Esteem program. He also coordinated a "Pay-Back Program", which encouraged community members to contribute time and materials to the school. Wayne's contributions to education in Nevada were recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the establishment of Wayne Tanaka Elementary School. His visionary leadership extended beyond the classroom, where he forged partnerships with the business community to enhance educational opportunities for students across the Las Vegas valley.

"Over his 28-year career, he was a beacon of inspiration for countless students, receiving numerous awards and recognition for his innovative ideas that significantly improved student achievement," CCSD said in a statement.
