Dr. Janet Allen (ME '91) passed away on April 8, 2023. She was 72 years old. 

At the time of her Milken Award, Janet taught English at Presque Isle High School, where Dick Durost (ME '95) served as principal. Janet's dedication to restructuring course offerings for at-risk students led her to plan and direct the Maine Aspirations Compact Summer Enrichment Program, which allowed 20 students to spend a summer living, working and studying together to increase their personal, academic and vocational aspirations.  

Janet earned her master's and doctoral degrees from University of Maine at Orono. She relocated to central Florida and taught at the University of Central Florida, where she established the Literacy Leadership Collaborative and authored books and teaching tools.
