Tom Torlakson, superintendent of the California Department of Education, has arrived to celebrate the launch of Ruben S. Ayala High School's sensitivity training program in an all-school assembly packed with students, staff and visiting dignitaries. But there's another reason to celebrate: Torlakson introduces Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation, who surprises English teacher Alexis King with the first Milken Educator Award of the 2017-18 season and $25,000!
