Under principal Lea Albert's leadership, Kahuku High School received the U.S. Department of Education School of Excellence Award in 1989. Her efforts have been instrumental in fostering pride at Kahuku, both with the staff and students as well as among the community. As principal, she has been recognized for her ability to motivate staff, encourage students, and actively involve parents. For that she was named one of the nation's top ten school leaders by the National School Safety Center. Determined to see students succeed, Ms. Albert has implemented many innovative programs to meet student needs, including after-school tutorials that assist athletes in achieving academic excellence and a seven-period day providing more course options for all students.
