June E. Eressy is principal of University Park Campus School in Worcester, a position that she has held since 2003. Designated as the only high-performing urban high school in the state, the school has a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate, and no dropouts. National Board Certified, Eressy was previously a language arts teacher at University Park Campus, where she began teaching with picture books to spark literary dialogue. This encouraged students to participate in literature circles and edit each other's work. Eressy's interdisciplinary units promote writing and reading across the curriculum. While many of her students entered the school reading several years below grade level, her strategies helped them achieve MCAS scores that exceeded those of the district and state. Eressy chaired the Humanities Curriculum Team at Clark University, with which Park Campus has formed a partnership. She has also hosted a literary circle for parents, ran the evening adult education program, and worked with neighborhood agencies to expand community learning opportunities.
