"For me, leadership means motivation," said Diane Weitz, principal of Carter Lake Elementary School in Carter Lake. In response to the pressing need for community agencies and services in her rural community, Mrs. Weitz spearheaded the creation of a Community Resource Center at Carter Lake Elementary School. The Center, which serves all Carter Lake residents, offers enrichment programs as well as social services. Under Mrs. Weitz's leadership, Carter Lake Elementary School also implemented before- and after-school daycare, a pre-school program for at-risk children, several programs that promote student leadership, and, through the "Family Services" program, a number of activities and strategies that address issues pertaining to the family setting. In 1991, Mrs. Weitz was recognized as a Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
