As principal of Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, William Howell uses a team approach to leadership, drawing upon the strengths and ideas of faculty, parents, students and business leaders to help guide the course of the school. Described by his peers as a great motivator and a kind, caring disciplinarian, Mr. Howell is highly supportive of his teachers and allows them a great deal of flexibility and freedom in making decisions. During his tenure, attendance levels and SAT scores have improved significantly. In his 21 years as an educator, his compassion and understanding of the needs of his students have gained him much recognition, including the 1996-97 Principal of the Year Award from the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.
