At Troy High School in Troy, mathematics teacher and department chair Wayne Nirode uses inquiry-based activities, real-life applications and technology to stimulate pupils' discovery of mathematical concepts. He keeps students and parents informed via his Web page, which includes postings of the class syllabus, grades and the status of students' performance objectives. Mr. Nirode teaches a freshman math course for Passage, an intervention program for at-risk freshmen and sophomores that has dramatically decreased the number of students requiring make-up credits outside of the school day. He has presented at national math and science conferences and at regional and international T3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology) Conferences. Mr. Nirode co-authored a book of lab activities using dynamic geometry software, and recently piloted two texts in his class.
