Nicknamed "Uncle Wally" by his students because of his highly personal approach to administration, Wallace Fujii, principal of Baldwin High School in Wailuku, has developed numerous programs to address his students' individual and ethnic concerns and to enrich his students' education. He created the Ursa program to ease the transition of incoming ninth-graders into high school. Mr. Fujii also created the Pono program, a cultural-sensitivity program designed to enhance both academic achievement and cultural awareness in students of Hawaiian heritage. Thanks to Mr. Fujii, Baldwin High is host to the only ROTC program on the island of Maui; in just four years, enrollment in the program has more than doubled.
