In 1990, when cancer damaged remedial reading teacher Vickie Boutiette's ability to speak, she knew that her best therapy would be returning to the classroom and continuing to teach. Her students at Westside Elementary School in West Fargo have learned the value of perseverance from her experience and continue to benefit from Mrs. Boutiette's expertise as a reading instructor. She was selected as North Dakota's first-ever teacher leader in the Reading Recovery intervention system for at-risk readers, as well as having been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and honors. In 1998, Mrs. Boutiette was awarded Teacher of the Year by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction.
