Feeling unfulfilled as a corporate finance analyst, teacher Tricia Lewicki discovered the joy of teaching and is now a fourth- and fifth-grade multi-age teacher at Beacon Hill Elementary School in Seattle. To develop students' vocabulary, Ms. Lewicki implemented a program called Word Market, in which students keep track of new words they have learned and recite the definitions at an "auction" attended by their families. Participants are awarded books for their work and serve as auctioneers at the next auction. Ms. Lewicki also makes social studies subjects come alive through a program called Storypath, in which students become characters of the time period being studied, writing speeches and journals about the issues of the day from their characters' perspectives. An expert in classroom management, she is a guest speaker on the topic at Seattle University.
