In Tracy Craven's first-grade classroom at Oakdale Elementary School in Rock Hill, activity and integrated learning go hand-in-hand. Her students build counting skills by doing jumping jacks and transforming the books they read into musical and dramatic performances. Throughout the year, Mrs. Craven compiles a video record of each student's progress, which she shares with parents. She is the sponsor of the school's award-winning environmental club and conducts a monthly math game show called "Dazzling Dragons." A National Board Certified teacher, Mrs. Craven offers staff development workshops on a variety of subjects, including inquiry-based science learning and math manipulatives. She mentors new and pre-service teachers, and is active in developing local, state and national curriculum and standards.
