Principal Thomas Starmack empowered the staff at South Allegheny High School (SAHS) in McKeesport to undertake the challenge of site-based management. He organized Teacher Leadership Teams that review curriculum, instruction and disciplinary efforts and are involved in all school decision-making. Among his other accomplishments at SAHS, Mr. Starmack facilitated a school-wide technology-integration effort, began a successful peer-tutoring program, introduced honors and Advanced Placement programs, and aligned the math curriculum with state standards. His leadership has fostered a school climate of self-reflection and accountability, resulting in strong learning gains. In addition to serving on several district planning and design committees, Mr. Starmack is active in professional and community organizations.
