Teresa de Garcia teaches bilingual and family mathematics at Boulder's University Hill Elementary, an alternative school. On the basis of her own background, she emphasizes the need to respect cultural diversity among her colleagues. She also helps her students by enlisting the support of their parents: inviting them to volunteer in the classroom and introducing them to various community resources. Using theatrics and humor to enhance presentations, Ms. de Garcia personifies all that is positive and relevant about bilingual and alternative education.
