Sylvia Shaina teaches second grade as Edison Elementary School in Fraser, where she was using the "hands on" approach long before the term became fashionable. In promoting student self-esteem, in keeping parents informed, in transforming her classroom into a living habitat, and in numerous other ways, Ms. Shaina has repeatedly broken new educational ground, approaching education with a highly developed understanding of what works. Active in community affairs, she is a member of her party's Executive Board in her congressional district, and has served on the board of directors of a local recycling organization. In 1989 she was named WDIV/Newsweek Teacher of the Year.
