From the rural thatched-roofed schools of her native Thailand, through the refugee camps of Southeast Asia, to her current role as founding principal of PATH Academy, a public college preparatory school in DeKalb County, Suttiwan Cox has been a strong advocate for both education and non-violence. Formerly a teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Richards Middle School in Lawrenceville, Ms. Cox acted as an unofficial liaison between the school and the families of her students, whom she visited weekly, to help them acquire basic necessities and translation services. Ms. Cox has served as an advisory board member for a project dealing with crime prevention in refugee communities and was the central commentator and focal educator in an award-winning PBS film about Atlanta's immigrant community.
