Prior to becoming principal of William Winsor Elementary School in Greenville, Susan L. Caputo held various teaching and administrative positions within the Diocese of Providence. Arriving at Winsor Elementary, Mrs. Caputo began working with teachers to replace the school's content-based curriculum with one that is standards-based. She also encouraged staff to provide differentiated instruction to their students. Mrs. Caputo placed a "Magical Mailbox" in the school lobby for students to deposit their best writing and artwork. These are then publicized at school assemblies, through the public address system, and on wall displays. She rewards students' good behavior with monthly breakfasts and recognition programs. Her students' higher test scores on state assessments have demonstrated the effectiveness of her approach. She is currently involved in launching the district's first Professional Development Academy and is a lecturer at Providence College.
