Despite teaching at a high-poverty school, fifth-grade teacher Susan Klinkhammer provides robust learning opportunities for her students at Lincoln Elementary School in Corvallis. For the past two years, Mrs. Klinkhammer has embarked on expeditions to both the Arctic and the Antarctic, each time posting photos and stories from the journey on a Web site for her students back home. She was instrumental in piloting a violence prevention curriculum at Lincoln Elementary called Second Step and helped implement the Junior Great Books approach to teaching literature and higher-order thinking. Mrs. Klinkhammer is chair of the committee that coordinates Lincoln Elementary's artist-in-residence program, through which she has brought various artists and artisans to the school.
