Students are constantly engaged in hands-on learning in fifth-grade teacher Susan M. (Phillips) Klabunde's classroom at Harwood Elementary School in Harwood. She implements Kagan Cooperative Learning Strategies in her classroom daily, promoting positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal participation and simultaneous discussion. She has given presentations on cooperative learning structures at the North Dakota Math Conference and North Dakota Title I Conference. Through the Eventide Program, Ms. (Phillips) Klabunde allows her students to discover another generation by interviewing local elderly citizens and writing letters to them. At the Institute for Excellence in Math and Science, she trains other teachers on a range of topics from standards-based education to authentic assessment. Ms. (Phillips) Klabunde created a summer school class at Harwood Elementary predominantly dealing with creative dramatics and arts. She is her building's elementary leader and frequently serves on district curriculum committees.
