At Sauk Rapids Rice Senior High School in Sauk Rapids, teacher Susan Henkemeyer instills in students a genuine thirst for knowledge. As lead teacher in an alternative learning program called STEPS (Students Transition for an Educational Program for Success), Mrs. Henkemeyer focuses on high expectations, individualized instruction, and respect for all, helping at-risk students achieve their highest potential. All STEPS students participate in her "Adopt a Family for the Holidays" program, in which they raise money to buy presents for families during the holiday season. She instituted a policy of personal responsibility that has dramatically improved student conduct. Mrs. Henkemeyer makes every effort to improve education and the community through collaboration and service, and works closely with parents of all of her students. She participates in numerous panels and committees statewide.
