Susan Bradburn, fourth- and fifth-grade teacher at West Marion Elementary School in Marion, believes that a child who is motivated to learn requires guidance, not teaching. Such motivation was on display when Mrs. Bradburn formed a partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science to create a museum at her school. Her students conducted research for the museum, helped design and test hands-on activities, and taught others, including teachers, about the museum. The following year, Mrs. Bradburn created the mobile museum program, in which her students travel to other classes and throughout the community, teaching hands-on science to fellow students, community members and even state legislators.
