As K-2 literacy coordinator for Community Consolidated School District 93 in Carol Stream, Susan Bolek promotes effective reading instruction in the district's six elementary schools. She trains kindergarten and first-grade teachers to analyze and use data from the Illinois Snapshot of Early Literacy (ISEL) to make decisions and apply research-based instructional best practices. In collaboration with teachers, administrators and parents, Miss Bolek developed a Sight Word Knowledge program to help first graders recognize vocabulary words through repetition in games and readings in class and at home. Miss Bolek established a tutoring outreach program by recruiting students from a local high school to help elementary students with reading, writing and math. She frequently conducts staff development in literacy for K-2 teachers throughout the district, training them in phonemic awareness, fluency and administration of the ISEL.
