Much of fifth- and sixth-grade Title I math teacher Susan Barrett's work at Cherry River Elementary School in Richwood is aimed at making her students feel a part of the school community. She is a pioneer of her school's unique Title I program, in which Title I teachers collaborate with other teachers to plan, teach and conduct student evaluations. She also supervises and recruits students for the "Study Buddy" program, a one-on-one tutoring system which pairs sixth-graders with Title I first-graders. Mrs. Barrett is also co-coordinator of the after-school program, which provides math and language arts remediation courses, access to learning technology and lively enrichment activities.
