Sue Winstead provides her second-graders at Hawthorne School in Bozeman with a fully integrated curriculum. During a unit on the rain forest, she introduced students to the jungle paintings of Rousseau, then helped them raise money to adopt an acre of rain forest in Costa Rica. She has written and piloted curricular units for NASA's Space Education Program and the local Museum of the Rockies. As an advisory member and teacher leader in the National Science Foundation's Keystone professional development project, she is involved in the development of strategic plans at both the school and district levels. Mrs. Winstead is director of Hawthorne's after-school and summer daycare programs and offers scholarship options for low-income and special needs children.
