Stuart Redpath, principal of Smith Middle School in Troy, developed several programs to help students reach their highest potential. The Homework Help Program, to name but one, provided evening tutoring for economically disadvantaged students living in a nearby apartment complex. Another of his initiatives, the Positive Peer Group, brought together eighth-graders who were nominated by teachers to represent their peers; once a month, these student leaders met with Mr. Redpath to discuss student issues and plan student activities. Mr. Redpath also required his students to maintain a portfolio throughout the year, and several times a year, student groups met with a teacher advisor to review their portfolios and evaluate their performance.
