Stuart Albright does more than teach his students how to write well at C. E. Jordan High School in Durham. He inspires a love of writing and turns students into published authors at the end of every school year. Albright teaches a pioneering, challenging yet popular elective course on writing, which has grown from one class to four, encompassing 120 students. An advocate for writing across the curriculum, Albright has helped students improve their writing skills in literature, history and other classes, as well as on the SAT. Each year, he works with a publisher to create a professionally bound book compiling his students' best writing. Albright has published a book of his own, Blessed Returns, chronicling the summer he spent at a summer program for disadvantaged youth in Camden, New Jersey. In addition to teaching, Albright has turned the school's football team around as its coach, and his next published book will recount stories of North Carolina's most successful high school football programs. He was named last year's Teacher of the Year by both Jordan High School and Durham Public Schools.
