When a national magazine sponsored a contest to identify outstanding teachers, the student who crafted the winning essay wrote about his teacher, Stoney Beavers. Remarkably, the young prize-winning author had been a struggling student until Mr. Beavers began spending countless extra hours working with him. Known as a teacher who helps students realize and achieve their potential, Mr. Beavers has helped many of his English and Spanish students achieve recognition in state and national writing competitions. Former students often drop by to thank him for preparing them to meet the rigors of college. Drawing upon his past experience with the Peace Corps, Mr. Beavers helps students learn respect for other cultures. To provide his classes with a better understanding of the Spanish language, he has had students prepare a series of video lessons to help the growing Hispanic community make the transition to life in rural Alabama. Whether he's using best practices in the classroom or heading a committee to improve instruction systemwide, this is one teacher who is making a significant impact on students, colleagues and community.
