At Phillips Elementary School in Marietta, fifth-grade teacher Stephen McDougle has designed and instituted several programs to increase student achievement. Mr. McDougle established the Science Education Partnership Award, a hands-on science and health curriculum developed by Ohio State University to enhance student interest in those subject areas. He created an after-school proficiency program to help students at risk of failing the math portion of the fourth-grade proficiency test. Mr. McDougle is a member of Marietta 2000, a district-level committee charged with finding ways to improve math and science achievement in the district, and has presented workshops on preparing students for the fourth-grade proficiency test.
