Spencer Reames teaches advanced biology to grades ten through twelve at Benjamin Logan High School in Bellefontaine. Mr. Reames grants that although educators today must respond to the intellectual as well as the social needs of students, their essential contribution has in fact changed very little. Teachers of the current generation like the teachers that preceded them must help students "build self-esteem by presenting them with meaningful challenges at which they can be successful." Mr. Reames hopes that his enthusiasm for learning and for science will have a positive and lasting effect on his students. He would be particularly pleased if his students contribute to the solutions to problems facing the world today. One of his dream projects involves a comparative on-site study of the ecosystems of Chesapeake Bay and Lake Erie; such a project is an accurate illustration of a teaching philosophy that equates education with awareness and action. Mr. Reames has been the frequent recipient of honors and awards in recognition for his excellence as a science teacher.
