Sonya Picklesimer teaches general, environmental and biological sciences at Williamson High School in Williamson. Ms. Picklesimer's rigor as a science educator has allowed her students to receive college credits and to compete with distinction in the International Science and Engineering Fair. Using hands-on activities, critical thinking and role playing, Ms. Picklesimer places a special emphasis on health and behavioral issues immediately affecting her students, including drug use and teen pregnancy. Ms. Picklesimer is also responsible for the Scientist for a Day program. With financial support from the community, Ms. Picklesimer's high school students pose as famous scientists and visit the local elementary school to perform lab experiments. As a member of the West Virginia Governor's Summer Institutes, Ms. Picklesimer also leads hands-on science workshops for other educators.
