Shirley Splittstoesser taught a fifth and sixth grade combination at Wiley School in Urbana. To be an outstanding teacher, she believes, one must keep in touch with students' needs, recent developments in education and teaching, community opportunities, and the physical environment of learning. Following her own precepts, Ms. Splittstoesser built partnerships with both parents and the local business community to enrich learning opportunities for her students. She inspired her students, encouraging them to maximize their academic performance, become independent learners, and mature into sound decision makers. After retirement, Shirley continued in education through volunteering in her church. Shirley extended to chairing her Neighborhood Watch group and an interest group sponsored by the University of Illinois.
