At Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Spanish teacher and Foreign Language Department chair Sheryl A. Castro uses a variety of speaking, reading and writing activities to reach all learners. In addition to Spanish, Ms. Castro teaches personal responsibility, respect and the importance of being proactive in the learning process. She incorporates her students' lives directly into the curriculum, and designs games and group activities based on the strengths of all students so that they can all participate. As coach of one of the school's Critical Friends Groups, Ms. Castro meets with teachers monthly to create, examine, revise and improve each other's work, and their students' work as well. She is a member of the school's Professional Development Team, conducts district-wide presentations, and serves as a mentor in the Teachers' Assistance Program.
