When Sheilah Smith began teaching at Frost Lake Magnet School of Technology and Global Studies in St. Paul, her technological skills were limited. Ms. Smith has since become the school's resident technology expert and has developed a technology-rich curriculum to help her low-income, limited English-proficient students succeed. In her multi-age classroom, students have created their own Web page, participated in Internet research projects, collaborated on multimedia presentations with older students and explored a wide range of software applications. She presents workshops and trains teachers nationwide on developing technology-integrated elementary curricula. In 1987, Ms. Smith was one of a handful of Minnesota educators chosen to teach for one year in Japan.
