Fourth-grade teacher Sheila Smith-McAdams of Winthrop School in Ipswich co-founded the 21st Century Classroom initiative, which outlines a system for transforming classrooms into active, student-driven, technology-rich, collaborative learning environments. The program is inclusionary, allowing students with special needs to work alongside their peers, and has expanded its reach to 36 classrooms throughout the district. She incorporates video technology into the assessment process and has worked with the district superintendent to create a variety of assessment options for the district's other 21st Century Classrooms. Ms. Smith-McAdams has previously served as president of the Ipswich Teachers Union and is active in local environmental protection efforts.
