While at St. Mary's Public Elementary School in Mt. Angel, principal Sharon Poteet advanced school improvements that addressed the needs of the region's many Hispanic and low-income families. She helped implement an inclusive curriculum at St. Mary's that provided strong support programs for both Title I and English as a Second Language students. Ms. Poteet also administered a character education program that promoted positive values through school assemblies, peer mentors and conflict management, and developed a Community Connections program which engaged students in a variety of projects with local businesses and city officials. In addition to her duties as principal, Ms. Poteet served as director of special education for the Mt. Angel School District.
