In her 29 years as an educator, Sharon Fisher, biology teacher at North High School in Des Moines, has transformed science from an academic subject into an adventure. Through a career-shadowing program she developed, Mrs. Fisher's students have witnessed live brain surgery, the birth of a baby, and cadaver dissections. Recently, she took several students from her school on a four-week exchange trip to Moscow; their Russian counterparts later visited Mrs. Fisher and her students in Iowa. These students continue to interact with their Russian friends via the Internet. Mrs. Fisher has twice won the National Science Foundation State Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Math and Science.
