In addition to teaching students at Ooltewah Middle School in Ooltewah about the past, U. S. history teacher Sharon Brown helps them deal with life in the present through a class entitled Teen Scene. Students in the class discuss current issues and problems facing teenagers; they explore such subjects as juvenile law and leadership; and they learn the skills required to obtain their first job. Mrs. Brown recently codeveloped a program called "Circle of Friends," in which Ooltewah students meet with students from a neighboring middle school for social events, field trips and educational activities. The program is designed to improve communications among adolescents, increase writing proficiency and encourage appropriate social behaviors.
