Communication arts teacher Sara Crump teaches a wide range of courses at Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, from basic English for sophomores to college-credit composition and literature for seniors. Building and maintaining relationships with students from a wide variety of backgrounds, Crump helps them develop the confidence to express themselves in writing and creates a classroom environment that encourages everyone to participate. She selects literature that students will find meaningful and can relate to and organizes hands-on activities and projects that bring the subject of their reading alive. Crump gives her students extensive feedback on their writing and encourages them to rewrite and resubmit their essays for consideration. Her teaching strategies have helped dramatically improve test scores in communication arts. Many former students have become teachers due to her influence, one of whom is now a fellow teacher at Blue Springs High School. A member of the leadership team for the Communication Arts Cadre, Crump has presented at state and national conferences and is an adjunct professor at both the University of Missouri—Kansas City and Longview Community College.
