Having spent most of her career teaching middle school science at Moss Bluff Middle School in Lake Charles, Sabra Soileau was recently assigned to teach eighth-grade social studies to improve declining test scores in the subject. Her outstanding instruction helped increase scores within one year. Splitting her day between teaching in the classroom and working as a curriculum resource teacher, Soileau teaches beyond textbooks, facilitating a learning environment rich with technology and hands-on activities. A highly effective teacher leader, she frequently models lessons in other teachers' classrooms, has mentored several pre-service and novice teachers, and was chosen by her principal to lead her colleagues during professional development meetings. She has served on district-level science and social studies committees, helped write curriculum units for the district, and is president-elect of the Louisiana Middle School Association (LMSA). After teaching each lesson, she asks herself if it's how she would want her own daughter taught. Such high personal standards help Sabra Soileau deliver high-quality instruction to all of her students.
