First-grade teacher Rosemary Basham has contributed not only to the learning of her students at Midland Trail Elementary School in Charleston, but to the development of teaching materials and instructional practices district- and statewide. Over 100 teachers have visited Ms. Basham's model classroom to observe her techniques of building literacy, such as literature circles, bookmaking and a "Weekend Bookbags" program that brings parents into the learning process. She served on a committee of first-grade teachers, designing units based on the state's Instructional Goals and Objectives that were distributed statewide. Ms. Basham is a member of the county's Instructional Strategies Cadre, and has made several presentations to standing-room-only audiences.
