Elementary teacher Roseann Maurantonio’s deep study of how language skills are acquired and improved make her an asset to her fourth-grade students at Rosendale Elementary in Niskayuna Central School District and a leader among her peers.
Struggling readers in Maurantonio’s classes make up to two years’ worth of gains in reading scores under her guidance due to her expertise in implementing a variety of proven English Language Arts approaches, including reading and writing workshops and peer-to-peer instruction. She is particularly adept at employing differentiated learning strategies tailored to meet each of her student’s particular needs. With a background that includes after-school programs and remediation support, Maurantonio draws on a wealth of experience to inform her comprehensive approach to student success.
Maurantonio is a leader in implementing effective teaching methods. She is a Professional Learning Community Facilitator in her district, where she has engaged five elementary schools in how to implement writing workshops to teach English Language Arts, and she has introduced professional development resources that have helped shape how the entire district teaches reading and writing. Her collaborative, caring and engaging manner is as effective working with peers as it is with her students.
Maurantonio maintains close ties with colleagues locally, in her previous schools in New York City where her classroom was used as a model, and at Teachers College of Columbia University. She is respected for her expertise and her ability to collaborate to enhance teaching methods and improve student outcomes. Maurantonio has earned Professional Certification in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Students with Disabilities, giving her a “whole child” perspective on student development. In addition, she helps train future teachers in literacy strategies as an adjunct instructor at University at Albany-SUNY. Her dedication to providing the best instruction possible to every student illustrates her devotion to her craft and makes her an inspiration to her learning community.
