Robyn Baker, multi-age first- and second-grade teacher at Poplar Elementary School in Poplar, honors Native American traditions of the past while embracing the future through technology. She is the creator and facilitator of the Red Buffalo Society, a Native American song and dance club that fosters students' pride in their tribal heritage. She also invites elders from the community to speak to the children on cultural issues. In the classroom, Ms. Baker uses computers to reinforce reading and language instruction and engages students in research using the Internet. A Skills Program Enhancement Teacher for the district, Ms. Baker chairs the Indian Education Committee and promotes parental engagement by leading a Positive Indian Parenting program.
