Principal Robert Miller has instituted several innovative reforms at Scituate Middle School in Scituate, from the inclusion of special needs students into the regular classroom to the training of teachers in the multiple intelligences model of instruction. Mr. Miller has established an interdisciplinary framework for teaching to show students the connections that exist among different subject areas. He also created a looping program in which students remain with an interdisciplinary teaching team for two years, allowing them to develop long-term relationships with their teachers and to study their material within a larger context. Mr. Miller is the founder of Rhode Island Middle Level Educators, an organization that has influenced state-level decisions regarding middle-level educational issues.
