Eighth-grade math teacher Robert Hetzel has developed an exemplary math program at O'Keefe Middle School in Madison. He led efforts to integrate technology into math and algebra courses, and developed an instructional Web site that includes math problems and highlights of student work. A leader in the use of performance assessments and portfolios, Mr. Hetzel has served on district leadership committees to address math standards and to seek ways to improve instruction in the district's middle schools. In addition to conducting staff workshops on using technology in the classroom, he developed a six-week class for parents on the district's middle school math program. Mr. Hetzel recently earned National Board Certification and was part of a delegation of math teachers that visited China in April 2001.
