Robert DeBuhr retired in 2005 after serving as principal of Grantham Elementary School in Clarkston. He believes that educators must "accept the child regardless of circumstances, and let the child know that, together, teacher and student have an important job to do." To reverse some of the effects that beset any community confronted by poverty and juvenile crime, Mr. DeBuhr established a Youth Services Program that serves as an umbrella organization for a variety of student support programs offered by the school and the community. He also supervised the establishment of developmentally appropriate classrooms which complement the traditional classroom program already in place at the school. In order to provide youngsters with positive role models, the school's Champions program pairs students with adults from the community. Mr. DeBuhr has been recognized as a National Distinguished Principal by the U. S. Department of Education. Currently he is enjoying full retirement living on the beach in Washington State. 2015, selected for the University of Montana Western's Educators Hall of Fame.
